Welcome to my groundbreaking project on creating an affordable Optical Heartbeat Monitor tailored specifically for athletes, my final project for Instrumentation for Engineering. Designed and implemented by a team member and myself from Ashesi University, this innovation aims to revolutionize how athletes monitor their heart rates during training and competitions using optical principles.
Traditional heart rate monitors often rely on costly electrical signals, limiting accessibility, especially in resource-constrained settings. This solution employs optical technology, offering a non-invasive, cost-effective method to measure heart rates. By utilizing an infrared LED and a phototransistor, the device detects changes in light absorption caused by blood flow in the fingertip, providing accurate readings without the need for cumbersome electrodes.
The project's signal conditioning chain, thoughtfully designed with active filters and amplifiers, ensures precise heartbeat detection while resisting noise and interference commonly found in dynamic athletic environments. With a clear focus on practicality and ease of use, the device serves as an indispensable tool for athletes, empowering them to optimize training intensity, monitor recovery, and prevent overtraining. Experience the future of athletic performance monitoring with our Inexpensive Optical Heartbeat Monitor for Athletes.
